Why is it called His Girl Friday?

His Girl Friday is an ironic title. It harks back to Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe novel and the character of man Friday.
A girl Friday is effectively a female who carries out the duties of an assistant. However, giving feminism tones in this film, and the fact that Hildy is Walter’s equal, not his assistant or servant, the title is used ironically.
