Who dubbed whom in Singin’ in the Rain?
Singin’ in the Rain parodies the transition Hollywood faced when they shifted from silent films to talkies. In a double move, they parody this both within the narrative and outside of it.
In the film itself, the character of Kathy Selden, played by Debbie Reynolds, dubs the voice of the character Lina Lamont, played by Jean Hagen.
The studio decided to dub Debbie Reynolds’s singing voice in the infamous scene where she is dubbing Lina. When it is meant to be Jean Hagen as Lina singing “Would You”, it is actually Debbie Reynolds as Kathy singing this.
However, the studio decided to dub Debbie Reynolds’s voice with that of Betty Noyes. So it’s Betty Noyes dubbing Debbie Reynolds dubbing Jean Hagen.
